Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area

Where Wilderness Meets the Cumberland Plateau

The Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area is one of the crown jewels of the Cumberland Plateau, stretching across 125,000 acres of protected ridges, valleys, and river gorges spanning northern Fentress County, Tennessee, and southern Kentucky.

Just minutes from Jamestown, Allardt, Clarkrange, and Pall Mall, Big South Fork offers endless outdoor adventure, breathtaking views, and a peaceful lifestyle surrounded by unspoiled natural beauty.

A Natural Treasure of the Plateau

Big South Fork protects the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and the dramatic landscape that surrounds it—towering sandstone bluffs, rock arches, waterfalls, and forested plateaus.

Visitors come from all over to explore:

  • Horseback riding on more than 180 miles of trails
  • Hiking and mountain biking through scenic ridge and river routes
  • Kayaking and rafting on the Cumberland River and its tributaries
  • Camping and photography in one of Tennessee’s most beautiful natural settings

Whether you’re after quiet solitude or thrilling adventure, the Big South Fork delivers both—right in Fentress County’s backyard.

History & Heritage

Long before it became a national park unit, this region was home to Native Americans, early settlers, and generations of farmers, loggers, and coal miners. Evidence of that history can still be seen today in homestead remains, rock shelters, and mining relics scattered throughout the area.

In 1974, Congress officially designated the Big South Fork as a National River and Recreation Area, preserving it for recreation, wildlife, and heritage for generations to come.

Nearby Pall Mall, the home of World War I hero Sgt. Alvin C. York, adds even more historic depth to this region of the Plateau.
